How it Started:
It seems once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu challenged each other regarding their supremacy. This kept on going. So Siva thought of setting the things right. He transformed himself into Jyothirlinga and asked both Brahma and Vishnu to find the adi and antam (Start and End) of the Jyothirlings. So Lord Vishu transformed himself into wild bore and started digging to find its base. Same time Lord Brahma transformed into swan and started flying up to find its top point. Both failed to find the start and end. This happened during the night which is known as Shiva Ratri.

Vishwanath,
Nice article on the story behind Maha Sivaratri.
To add to the article, this event happened on the night of Magha Bahula Chaturdasi. So, every year we celebrate Maha Sivaratri on that day.
