What does lighting of the lamp means ? Well sombody said Light represents Knowledge and Darkness signifies ignorance. Since HE is the ultimate source for knowledge (Chaitanya) and illuminator of all knowledge and Knowledge = Light, so Light = HIM.
So while lighting the lamp we can pray as follow:
Deepajyothi parabrahma
Deepa sarva tamopahaha
Deepena saadhyate saram
Sandhyaa deepo namostute

The Rituals we follow - Starting
Generally every morning after bath I stand before pooja mandir and pray. While praying I follow certain rituals. I am sure we all follows one ritual or other, which we might have learnt from our parents. Then a thought came. Why we follow these rituals. Is there any significance of these rituals. Is there any principle behind these. I can get answersfrom two sources. One from the guru (which I dont have) and the other is google. So took help of our good ol' friend - Google. The result(s) I got is listed here as I understood. I am not sure, if those are correct. And also what is given here is not mine, just took from the search results and logged here as I understood.

Infinite dimensions of Parama Siva
How it Started:
It seems once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu challenged each other regarding their supremacy. This kept on going. So Siva thought of setting the things right. He transformed himself into Jyothirlinga and asked both Brahma and Vishnu to find the adi and antam (Start and End) of the Jyothirlings. So Lord Vishu transformed himself into wild bore and started digging to find its base. Same time Lord Brahma transformed into swan and started flying up to find its top point. Both failed to find the start and end. This happened during the night which is known as Shiva Ratri.
